What our customers say

Filmed by our customers, not scripted by us.

How does possum removal in Geelong actually work?

Start with what the law allows, because it changes the whole job. Possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975, and under the Wildlife Regulations 2024 a possum caught at your property must be released within 50 metres of where it was caught, on the same property, after dark. No operator may lawfully move it off your property. So catching alone achieves very little: the same animal is outside your house that night, looking for the way back in. Sealing the building is the fix. On Geelong housing that means the roof and, on older stumped properties, the subfloor as well, which is dry and sheltered and used just as readily. One thing is checked before anything is closed: whether there is dependent young inside, because sealing a female out is how a roof becomes a dead animal in a wall. Call 0436 389 114, seven days.

The law first

What may lawfully be done with a possum

This is worth reading before you ring anyone, because it explains why quotes in this trade differ so much.

Possums are protected wildlife. That single fact rules out most of what people expect to be offered, and it is the reason the honest version of this job is a building job rather than an animal job.

  • Release is within 50 metres, on the same property, after dark. That is what the Wildlife Regulations 2024 require.
  • Moving a possum off the property is not lawful, no matter how reasonable it sounds. If someone offers it, that tells you something about the operator.
  • They may not be killed as a way of solving a roof problem. There is no such thing as a lawful possum exterminator.
  • Ringtails are handled differently again, and DEECA sets the conditions that apply.

What is included

Possum Control Geelong: what the job covers

A possum job is really a building job with an animal in the middle of it. Everything below is aimed at getting the roof empty and keeping it that way.

Roof and subfloor inspection

A lot of Geelong housing sits on stumps, so possums get under the floor as well as into the ceiling. Both get checked, not just the space you can hear.

Working out which possum

Brushtail and ringtail behave differently and the law treats them differently, so the species decides what may lawfully be done.

What a possum catcher may lawfully do

Where a possum has to be caught, the trap sits on your property and is checked as the law requires. A possum catcher or possum trapper works within those limits, and so does the possum man anyone else sends.

Joeys checked before anything is closed

A female with young in the roof is the reason a sealed entry point can turn into a dead animal in a wall. We check first, every time.

Entry points sealed properly

Lifted tiles, broken valley irons, gaps at the fascia, open subfloor vents and the branch that runs to your gutter.

A written record

What species, where they were getting in, what was done and what still needs work. Useful for a landlord, an agent or an insurer.

Roof, subfloor and the openings, all covered in one visit.

The part that lasts

Possum Proofing Geelong: sealing the roof and the subfloor

If the catching is the part you can see, this is the part that decides whether you call anyone again.

A possum put back outside your house that night will try the same route first. Close that route and it has to go somewhere else. Leave it open and you have simply had an expensive night out.

On older Geelong housing the work runs in two places rather than one, because a stumped floor gives them a second way in that a slab never does.

  • Lifted tiles, broken valley irons and gaps at the fascia and barge boards.
  • Subfloor vents and stump line screened where possums are using underneath.
  • Branches that run to the gutter noted, because that is usually the road in.
  • Possum spikes where a particular ledge or beam is being used as a route.
  • Nothing sealed until we are satisfied no dependent young is inside.

Ask for the building to be priced for proofing, not just a night of trapping.

Smell, not noise

Dead Possum Removal Geelong: when the first sign is a smell

Some calls start with no movement at all, just a smell that takes over a room within a few days.

The most common cause is a possum sealed into a roof or a subfloor by someone who closed the openings without checking first. It is also why we check for young before anything is closed.

We locate it, remove it, and treat the blowflies and beetles that follow within days. Dead possum removal is usually a same day job, because it gets worse every day it waits.

  • Locating the source by smell, fly activity and staining.
  • Removal, then treatment of the insects it has attracted.
  • Neutralising the cavity or subfloor rather than masking it.
  • Finding out how it got in, because that opening is still there.

How a job runs

From the first night noise to a sealed building

No surprises, and no price that changes once we are on site.

STEP 1

Tell us what you hear, and when

Heavy thumping across the ceiling after dark reads as brushtail. Lighter scurrying, often in a wall or a lower roof space, can be ringtail.

STEP 2

We inspect the roof and underneath

On older Geelong housing the subfloor matters as much as the ceiling, and it is frequently where the damage is.

STEP 3

Fixed price before we travel

Covering the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast run, confirmed before we leave and unchanged on arrival.

STEP 4

The lawful process

Any catching, holding and release is done the way Victorian law requires, and we explain each step rather than leaving you to trust us.

STEP 5

Sealing, which is the actual fix

The entry points get closed once we know there is no dependent young inside. That is the part that keeps the roof empty.

One fixed price for the whole job, confirmed before we leave.

Two myths

Possum relocation and possum exterminators, corrected

These two searches come up constantly, and both describe something that cannot lawfully be provided. It is worth saying so plainly.

The possum relocation myth. People picture a possum being driven to bushland. Victorian law does not allow that: release is within 50 metres, on the same property, after dark. An operator promising relocation is either breaking the law or not doing what they said.

The possum exterminator myth. There is no such lawful service for a protected species. Anyone offering to destroy a possum to fix a roof problem is offering an offence rather than a solution.

  • Neither myth is a small technicality. Both are offences under the Wildlife Act 1975.
  • The lawful answer to both is the same: catch if needed, check for young, and seal the building.
  • A sealed roof is also the only version that stays fixed, which is the practical argument as well as the legal one.
  • If anyone quotes you either, that is worth knowing before you book them.

Told that relocation is not lawful here? Ask us what the real job is.

Questions

Possum removal questions, answered

How quickly can you come out for a possum in Geelong?
Usually the same day where a slot is open, seven days a week, and we cover the Bellarine and the Surf Coast on the same run. Call 0436 389 114 and we will tell you what is genuinely free today.
Can the possum be moved off my property?
No, and no operator lawfully may. Under Victorian law a possum caught at your property must be released within 50 metres of the capture site, on the same property, after dark. That is not a company policy, it is the law, and anyone offering to drive it somewhere else is telling you what you want to hear. It is also why sealing the roof is the only thing that actually works.
So what is the point of catching it at all?
Catching gets the animal out of the roof so the entry points can be closed safely, and lets us confirm there is no dependent young left behind. The catching is the visible half. The sealing is the half that ends the problem, because a possum put back outside a sealed roof has to find somewhere else.
Is it a brushtail or a ringtail?
Brushtails are cat sized with a bushy black tail and they are the ones thumping across a ceiling. Ringtails are smaller, with a thin tail that has a white tip, and they usually build a nest outside in dense foliage rather than living in a roof. The species changes what is lawful, so it matters.
What about the subfloor? Our house is on stumps.
Very common around Geelong, and often overlooked. An open subfloor is dry, sheltered and undisturbed, so possums use it as readily as a roof. If you are hearing movement low down rather than overhead, that is usually what it is, and the vents and stump line need screening.
Something has died in the roof and the smell is terrible.
That is dead possum removal, and it is usually a same day job. We locate it, remove it and treat the insects it has drawn in. It also tells us something important: there was an entry point, and unless it is sealed the same thing happens again.
What does possum removal cost in Geelong?
It depends on the roof, the access and how much proofing the building needs. A single accessible entry point is straightforward, a long roof line with several openings is not. You get one fixed price before we travel.
