Possum removal in Berwick: how it works
Possum removal in Berwick is done by sealing every way into the roof or wall except one, fitting a one way door over that gap, and closing it once the possum has gone out for the night. It is the lawful method for a brushtail, it works on both the older homes near the village and the newer estates, and you get a fixed price before we travel. Two kinds of Berwick home, two kinds of possum problem
Berwick in the City of Casey has two very different sides, and possums find their way into both. Around the old village and the streets near Wilson Botanic Park and Cardinia Creek, homes are older, gardens are big and the trees are tall. Those roofs tend to be tiled, with years of weathering behind them, and a possum in roof spaces there usually comes in through lifted tiles or cracked ridge capping.
Nearby, we see the same thing in Dandenong and in the new estates around Cranbourne, where rats are the bigger problem. The newer estates are a different story. Roofs there are often metal, the trees are smaller, and you would think possums would leave them alone. They do not. On newer homes we see possums getting in where the roof meets a wall, through gaps left around solar panel and air conditioning penetrations, and under box gutters. A fence line or a pergola is often the ladder.
Berwick also has a lot of garages, sheds and granny flats. A possum in wall cavities or in a shed roof is a common call here, and it needs the same approach as a house: find how it gets in, make sure it can get out, then close it.
- Older tiled roofs near the village and the park
- Newer estates with gaps at roof and wall junctions
- Openings around solar panels and air conditioners
- Sheds, garages and granny flats with open eaves

Tell us how old the house is. It changes where we look first.
Where possums get into Berwick homes
These are the entry points we find most often across 3806. If you can see any of them from the ground, mention it when you call.
Lifted roof tiles
The classic entry on older homes. A tile shifted by wind or by a tradesperson leaves a gap a possum can push through.
Ridge capping and valleys
Old mortar cracks and falls away along the ridge and in valleys, leaving a clean way under the tiles.
Roof and wall junctions
Where a lower roof meets a second storey wall there is often a gap behind the flashing, common on double storey homes in the estates.
Service penetrations
Holes cut for solar cables, air conditioning lines and exhaust fans are not always sealed properly afterwards.
Box gutters and fascia
A small gap between the gutter and the fascia board is enough, especially where a tree or pergola gives the possum a way up.
Wall vents and weep holes
A possum in wall cavities usually got there from the roof, but damaged wall vents can be a way in on their own.
Recognise one of these? We can usually seal it the same day.
Possum control that actually ends the problem
Good possum control is mostly building work. On the first visit we inspect the roof line and roof space, find the nest and the runs, and seal every entry except the main one using mesh, flashing and fixed covers that suit your roof.
A possum one way door goes over the main entry. The possum leaves after dark to feed, as it does every night, and cannot push its way back in. We check that the roof is empty, then seal the last gap. If there is a young possum that cannot yet leave by itself, we do not seal it in.
Possum proofing does not end at the roof. We point out the branches, fences and climbers the possum uses as a ladder, and we can advise on a possum box for a tree in your yard so the brushtail has a home that is not your ceiling.
- Inspection of roof line, roof space and walls
- All secondary entries sealed on day one
- One way door on the main entry
- Final seal once the roof is empty
- Branch, fence and possum box advice

Possum catcher or one way door: what Victorian law allows
Brushtail possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. A brushtail living in a building may be trapped, but it has to be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the day it was caught. Taking it to the bush is not allowed. That is why hiring a possum catcher to cage it and drive it away is not a legal option in Victoria, whatever you may read online.
Ringtail possums need an Authority to Control Wildlife before anyone can trap them, and that authority is held by the landholder. In practice ringtails rarely live in roofs anyway. They prefer dense shrubs and hedges.
The one way door avoids all of that. The possum is never handled, it leaves under its own steam, and it stays in its home range, which is what the law intends.
- Brushtails trapped in a building stay on your property
- Release within 50 metres, after sunset, the same day
- Ringtails need an authority held by the landholder
- A one way door means the possum is never handled
Questions about the law? We will explain it on the phone.
Dead possum removal in Berwick roofs and walls
Sometimes the call is not about a live possum at all. When a possum dies in a roof or a wall cavity, the smell arrives within a day or two and gets worse fast in warm weather. We also handle dead possum removal across Berwick: finding it, removing it, treating the area for odour and flies, and sealing the entry it used.
If you hear a possum in the roof for weeks and then it goes quiet and a smell starts, call early. The sooner it is out, the less it soaks into insulation and plaster. See our same day dead animal removal service for how that job runs.
- Located by smell, flies and roof inspection
- Removed, bagged and taken away
- Area treated for odour and flies
- Entry sealed so it does not happen again

Possum removal cost in Berwick: what changes the price
There is no honest flat rate for possum removal, because the work is in the roof, and every roof in Berwick is different. A single storey home with one gap is a short visit. A double storey home in an estate with openings around the solar panels and a possum in wall cavities as well is a bigger one.
Whatever the job, you get the price before we travel and it does not change on the day. If we find something extra, such as a second nest or storm damage, we tell you and you decide.
- How many entries and how high they are
- Tile, terracotta or metal roof
- Roof only, or roof and walls
- Any dead possum removal or odour treatment needed
