How does bee removal in Geelong actually work?

The first question is swarm or established hive, because they are different jobs. A swarm is a cluster resting in the open with no comb and nothing to defend, and it is usually collected alive without much difficulty. An established colony inside a cavity has comb and stores, and then the comb has to be removed rather than the bees simply killed, or the wax melts through summer, honey runs through the structure and the fermenting comb pulls in robber bees, ants and wax moth. Around Geelong the cavity is as likely to be a shed wall, a water tank stand or a farm building as a house, and those sites get reoccupied season after season because the scent stays and nobody seals them. That is why closing the entry point is part of the job rather than an optional extra. Call 0436 389 114, seven days.

Start with a photo

Bees or European wasps?

A large share of the bee calls we take around Geelong turn out to be European wasps, and the two need opposite handling.

It takes about five seconds to settle if you can send a picture.

  • Honey bees. Furry, rounder, golden brown, carrying pollen on their back legs, and working flowers. Removed alive where we can.
  • European wasps. Smooth, bright yellow and black, straight purposeful flight, and very interested in meat and sweet drinks. Treated, not relocated.
  • A swarm. A hanging cluster with no comb. Usually docile and often collected alive.
  • An established hive. Weeks of steady traffic into one hole in a shed, wall or tank stand, with comb inside.

What is included

Bee Removal Geelong: what the job covers

A bee job is finished when the comb is out and the cavity is closed, not when the bees stop flying.

Bee or wasp, settled first

European wasps get mistaken for bees constantly. A beekeeper checks this first and so do we, because the treatments are opposite.

Bee swarm removal

A swarm resting in a tree, on a fence or under an eave carries no comb yet, so swarm removal usually means collecting them alive.

Beehive removal from sheds, walls and roofs

On a Geelong block bee hive removal is as often from an outbuilding or a water tank stand as from a house wall.

Comb and honey taken out

Left in a cavity it melts in summer heat, ferments and draws robber bees, ants and beetles. It has to come out.

Sealing the site

Old hive sites attract new swarms because the scent stays. Sealing is what ends the cycle rather than repeating it.

A written record

What was removed and what was sealed, which matters for a rental, a farm building or a managed property.

Collected or removed, cleaned out and sealed.

Farm buildings and sheds

Bee hive removal from Geelong sheds, tank stands and outbuildings

On rural and semi rural blocks the hive is usually not in the house at all, and the same structures get used over and over.

A shed wall, the cavity under a water tank stand, a disused outbuilding or a hollow fence post all give a colony exactly what it wants: a dry cavity, a small defensible entrance and no disturbance. Scouts from a new swarm actively seek out sites that smell like previous colonies, which is why the same shed wall gets occupied season after season.

So on these properties the sealing matters as much as the removal. Take the comb out, clean the site, close the entrance, and the cycle stops.

  • Shed walls, tank stands, outbuildings and hollow posts are the usual sites.
  • Comb and honey removed, not left to melt and ferment.
  • The site cleaned so the residual scent does not advertise it.
  • Entry sealed, which is what stops the same wall being reoccupied.

Same shed wall every year? Ask about sealing, not just removal.

What a booking looks like

From the call to a sealed building

No surprises, and no price that changes once we are on site.

STEP 1

Tell us what you have found

A swarm in the open, or traffic in and out of a wall, shed or tank stand. Say whether stock or pets use the area.

STEP 2

We confirm the species

Bees or European wasps. Send a photo when you call and it is usually obvious straight away.

STEP 3

One fixed price, before we drive

Covering Geelong, the Bellarine and the Surf Coast, confirmed before we leave.

STEP 4

Collection or full removal

Swarms collected. Established hives opened, comb removed and the cavity cleaned out.

STEP 5

Seal and finish

Entry point closed and the site treated so a new swarm is not drawn back to it.

One fixed price for the whole job, confirmed before we leave.

Cost

Bee Removal Cost Geelong: what changes the price

The gap between the cheapest and the dearest bee job is wide, and it is almost entirely about access rather than about bees.

You get your number before we travel, based on what you describe and the photo you send, and it does not change on the day.

  • Swarm or hive. A swarm collection is the cheapest job we do. An established hive in a cavity is the dearest.
  • Where the cavity is. A shed wall at ground level and a second storey chimney are not comparable.
  • How long it has been there. More time means more comb, more honey and a longer clean out.
  • Making good. Where cladding or plaster has to be opened we will tell you up front what that involves.

Get your own number, not a range. Quotes are free and fixed.

Questions

Bee removal questions, answered

Can the bees be saved?
Wherever it is possible, and we would rather they were. A swarm in the open is usually collected alive without difficulty. An established hive in a wall or a roof is harder and cannot always be removed alive safely. We tell you which one you have on the phone, rather than promising a live outcome for every job.
There is a swarm hanging in a tree on the property.
That is the easiest version of this job and often the least urgent. A resting swarm has no comb and nothing to defend, and it will frequently move on within a day or two on its own. If it is near a run, a kennel, a doorway or anywhere children go, call us and we will prioritise it.
Bees have moved into the shed wall. What happens now?
It becomes a removal rather than a collection. Once comb is built it has to come out, because killing the colony and leaving the comb causes the real damage: wax melts in summer heat, honey runs through the cavity, and the fermenting comb pulls in robber bees, ants and wax moth.
Are they bees or European wasps?
Worth settling before anyone quotes. Bees are furry and rounder, carry pollen and work flowers. European wasps are smooth and bright, fly in straight lines and go for meat and sweet drinks, especially around a barbecue. Send a photo when you call.
Will another swarm move into the same spot?
Yes, unless it is sealed. An old hive site keeps its scent, and scouts from a new swarm treat that as evidence the cavity works. On farm buildings and sheds we see the same wall reoccupied season after season until someone closes it properly.
We have hives on the property already. Does that matter?
Tell us when you call. On rural and semi rural blocks around Geelong there are often managed hives nearby, and a swarm may well have come from one. It changes nothing about the removal, but it is useful context and sometimes the owner wants them back.
What does bee removal cost around Geelong?
A swarm in an accessible spot is the cheapest. A hive inside a wall, a roof or a tank stand costs more because of the opening up and the clean out. One fixed price before we travel.
