Possum removal in Greensborough: the short answer

Possum removal in Greensborough means getting a brushtail out of your roof and making sure it cannot get back in. We find every gap it uses, fit a one way door over the main entry so it leaves on its own after dark, then seal the roof once it has gone. It is lawful, it works on the split level and sloping block homes common around 3088, and the price is fixed before we travel. See our full possum removal service, or call 0436 389 114, seven days.

Why here

Why Greensborough roofs attract possums

Greensborough sits on the Plenty River in the City of Banyule, and a lot of the suburb is hilly, green and full of mature gums. That canopy is exactly what a brushtail possum wants. It feeds in the trees at night, and when it finds a warm, dry roof a short jump from a branch, it moves in. Most of the calls we get from 3088 come from streets that back onto reserves or the river corridor, where the trees run right up to the gutters.

The housing adds to it. Plenty of Greensborough homes are split level or built into a slope, with more than one roof line and junctions where a lower roof meets a wall. Those junctions, along with lifted tiles, gaps under ridge capping and loose flashing, are where a possum gets in. On a sloping block there is often a high side where the eaves sit close to the ground and a tree, and that is usually the way in.

Brushtails are also territorial. When one leaves, another from the same patch of bush is quick to try the same gap. That is why a possum in roof problem in Greensborough is really a roof problem. Moving the animal without closing the gap just makes room for the next one. We see the same thing along the Diamond Creek corridor, as our possum removal in Eltham page explains.

  • Streets backing onto the Plenty River and its reserves
  • Split level homes with several roof junctions
  • Gum trees and overhanging branches touching gutters
  • Older tiled roofs with lifted or cracked tiles

The signs

How to tell a possum is in your roof

Most people hear a possum before they see one. These are the signs we ask about on the phone, because they tell us whether it is a possum, a rat or something else.

Heavy thumping after dark

Possum noise in roof spaces is loud: a thud when it lands, then running. It starts around dusk when it goes out to feed and again before dawn when it comes home.

Hissing and screeching

Brushtails make a deep guttural call and hiss at each other. Rats scratch and scurry but they do not make that noise.

Yellow stains on the ceiling

Possum urine soaks through insulation and shows up as brown or yellow patches on the plaster, often near a light fitting or a cornice.

A strong, sharp smell

A roof a possum has used for months has a musky, ammonia smell that gets worse in warm weather and after rain.

Droppings on the roof or path

Possum droppings are larger than a rat, about the size of a jelly bean, and often collect on a flat roof, a pergola or under the entry point.

Scratches and a worn path

Look for scratch marks on a post or tree trunk and dirty marks on the gutter or fascia where it climbs in every night.

Seen two or more of these? That is a possum. Get it priced today.

The method

How we get a possum out of a Greensborough roof

There is no single trick. The job is finding the entry, closing everything else, and letting the possum leave through a door it cannot come back through. We start outside, walking the roof line and the high side of the block, then go into the roof space to find the nest, the runs through the insulation and the gaps.

Every gap except the main one is sealed on the first visit with materials that suit the roof, such as mesh behind tiles, flashing and fixed covers over vents. A possum one way door goes over the main entry. The possum goes out to feed after dark as usual, and the door closes behind it.

Once we are sure the roof is empty, the last gap is sealed. If a young possum is still in the roof and too small to leave on its own, we stop and plan around it rather than seal it in. That is also why we suggest a possum box in a tree on your block: the brushtail keeps its territory, and it has somewhere to go that is not your ceiling.

  • Roof void and roof line inspection, both levels
  • Secondary gaps sealed on the first visit
  • One way door fitted over the main entry
  • Final seal once the roof is confirmed empty
  • Possum box advice for your trees

The law

Possum traps and catchers: what the law allows

A lot of people search for a possum catcher or a possum trap, so it is worth being clear. Possums are protected native wildlife under the Wildlife Act 1975. A brushtail possum living in a building may be trapped, but it must be released on the same property, within 50 metres of where it was caught, after sunset on the same day. Possum relocation to the bush or another suburb is not legal, and it is also bad for the possum, which rarely survives in strange territory.

Ringtail possums are different again. They usually nest in dense shrubs rather than roofs, and they cannot be trapped without an Authority to Control Wildlife, which is held by the landholder, not by a pest controller. So if you have a ringtail, a trap is the wrong tool entirely.

That is why trapping on its own rarely solves anything. The possum is released back on your block the same night, the gap is still open, and it is back in the roof by midnight. The one way door and the seal do the real work.

  • Brushtails in a building: release on the same property, within 50 metres
  • Release after sunset, the same day as capture
  • Ringtails: no trapping without an authority held by the landholder
  • Moving a possum off your property is not lawful

Cost

What decides the possum removal cost in Greensborough

We do not publish a single price, because two houses in the same Greensborough street can be very different jobs. What we do promise is a fixed price, agreed before we travel, that does not move on the day.

The possum removal cost comes down to the roof, not the possum. A single storey brick veneer with one obvious gap is a short job. A split level home on a slope, with three roof lines, a lot of lifted tiles and a nest that has been there for a year, takes longer and needs more material to seal.

  • Number of entry points and how high they are
  • Tiled, terracotta or metal roof
  • Single storey, double storey or split level
  • Whether stained insulation or ceilings need attention
  • Whether a possum box is wanted for the garden

Get your fixed price. It costs nothing to ask.

Keep them out

Possum proofing a Greensborough home for good

Possum proofing is what stops the next one. After the roof is sealed, the most useful thing you can do is cut the bridges. Trim branches back at least a metre from the roof and gutters, and keep climbing plants off downpipes and fences that run up to the eaves.

Scratching that is lighter and runs all night is more likely rats, which is a different job: see rodent control. Check the roof after a big storm. Greensborough gets strong winds through the river valley, and a single tile that slips is enough to open the roof again. If you do hear running again, call early. A new possum that has only just moved in is a much smaller job than one that has settled.

  • Branches trimmed a metre clear of the roof
  • Climbers kept off downpipes and eaves
  • Roof checked after storms and high winds
  • A possum box on a tree, away from the house

Want the roof checked while we are there? Just ask.

Questions

Possum removal Greensborough questions

How fast can you get to Greensborough 3088?
Usually the same day if you call in the morning, seven days a week. Tell us when you hear the possum and we will plan the visit around it.
How do I get rid of a possum in my roof?
How to get rid of possums in roof spaces comes down to three things: find every entry, seal all but one, and fit a one way door over that last one so the possum leaves after dark and cannot come back. Then seal it. Scaring it out with lights or noise does not work for long.
Can I set a possum trap myself?
A brushtail living in a building can be trapped, but it must be released on the same property, within 50 metres, after sunset the same day, and ringtails cannot be trapped at all without an authority. Since the possum comes straight back to an open roof, a trap on its own rarely fixes anything.
Will you take the possum somewhere else?
No. Possum relocation away from your property is not legal in Victoria, and a possum dropped in strange territory rarely survives. The lawful fix is the one way door and a sealed roof.
Do you use a possum catcher or cage?
Only where it is the right tool, and always within the law. Most Greensborough jobs are solved with a one way door and sealing, which is faster and does not depend on the possum walking into a cage.
How much does possum removal cost in Greensborough?
It depends on the roof: how many gaps, how high, and what the roof is made of. We give you a fixed price before we travel, so you know the full cost up front.
Is it a possum or a rat?
Possums are heavy and loud, with thumping and hissing around dusk and dawn. Rats are lighter, scratch and run through the night, and leave small droppings. If you are not sure, describe the noise and we will tell you.
What if there is a baby possum?
We check for young before the final seal. If a young possum cannot leave by itself, we do not seal it in. We plan the last step around it.
